A Welcoming Culture of Inclusion

Culture at the Field Museum

Fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse environment is a foundational commitment of the Field Museum. We strive to be an institution that reflects and supports the wide range of identities, experiences, and perspectives found within our staff, audiences, and communities.

Our mission, supported by our Culture & Engagement Advisory Council, is to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the Museum and in coordination with the Board Committee focused on these efforts. Together, we aim to ensure systems and spaces that invite meaningful participation and elevate a broad spectrum of voices, approaches, and insights to help shape the Museum’s mission, culture, practices, and policies.

We understand that meaningful progress cannot happen in isolation. That’s why we are committed to cultivating connections across the entire Museum community, encouraging all individuals to play an active role in making our institution more inclusive, open, and reflective of the world around us.

Our Mission

The Field Museum connects all of us to the natural world and human story.

Strategic Objectives

  • Advance the Field Museum as a thriving, resilient, sustainable, and highly relevant institution.
  • Inspire wonder and connection to nature and each other in order to understand and protect our world.
  • Engage broader audiences in person and online to create a transformative visitor
    experience.
  • Strengthen community engagement in and beyond Chicago to increase access and inclusion.

In alignment with our mission and strategic objectives, the museum has adopted core values to foster a culture of trust, accountability, and transparency with our staff, visitors, and communities.

Credibility forms a vital foundation for our work and our integrity, encompassing trust, authenticity, and reliability.

Curiosity inspires learning about each other and our world. A spirit of inquiry encourages staff members and visitors to ask questions, seek answers, and explore new ideas.

Inclusion emphasizes recognition and representation of diverse cultures, perspectives, and narratives within our programming, collections, and staff. Collaboration and respect support inclusion.

Led by our Senior Director of Culture & Engagement, and with the support of our leadership, board, and key staff stakeholders, we strive to integrate our core values into every aspect of our culture.
